William Andrew McCartney had two wives, both Nancy's. The first, Nancy Caroline Baird, had the first child, Sarah Jemima McCartney, in 1842. Sarah Jemima later went on to marry a Pratt and had as her first children, female twins, Eliza Tennessee and Mary, in 1859.

Nancy Caroline Baird died on August 4, 1851. In 1852, William Andrew married Nancy Irvin. She had 9 children over a span of 21 years! The last child was Lewis Wesley McCartney in 1874. Thus, Sarah J., the first child, was 32 years old when he was born. Her first children, the twins, were already 15, but he was their half-uncle.
