Martha was the daughter of William Andrew McCartney and Nancy Caroline (Baird) McCartney. Her mother, Nancy Caroline, had passed away in 1851, and her father, William Andrew, had married Nancy Emily Irvin in 1852.

The location of Martha's burial is unknown; however, family research and tradition suggests that she could have been buried in her mother's family cemetery--Baird Cemetery, located in Milan, Gibson County, Tennessee. This cemetery was completely destroyed in the 1970's along with most of the gravestones.
