Jonas Ely married Eliza J Hoilman on 6 March 1882 at Carroll County, Indiana. The couple moved to Young County, Texas in 1883 from records I've found. He was a prominent pioneer settler. Jonas Ely came to Texas in 1877 from Indiana. Jonas Ely worked for the S.R. Crawford Ranch, seven miles north of Graham for a number of years. He was a charter member of the Corinthian Lodge and Knights of Pythias. Jonas and Eliza Ely had a business on the square for a number of years. The couple opened a bakery, confectionery, and fancy grocery store in 1890.

Jonas Ely passed quietly last Monday morning at his home on South Oak Street. Jonas Ely was the proprietor of the Ely Ice Cream and Chili parlor, and in this connection, had identified himself with the business circle of Graham for many years, and was one of the few surviving early citizens of Graham. Many interesting stories could be related to Mr. Ely, relative to the early days of Graham. He was counted among her oldest settlers. He was a man of quiet dignity, reserved in manner, attesting to his own affairs. He was a good father and husband. A true friend and kind neighbor. Services at the grave were conducted by the Knights of Pythias, of which he was a loyal member.
