Sarah's first husband, Monte Lee Hamilton, was a farm hand on the family farm. They were married on August 31, 1913. Sadie became a widow with 3 small children, one an infant, when Monte died in St. Louis during the 1918 flu epidemic.
As Sadie returned home by train, she and her children were entertained by a young man whose name was P. J. Newell. On October 6, 1919, P.J. and Sadie were married.
Sadie was an excellent homemaker who loved to cook and sew. She made beautiful quilts. She loved having her family around her and had a mischievous smile and a ready laugh. The twinkle in her eye was only matched by that of her husband P.J. They were active in their church, First Baptist of Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
Sadie was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease while in her early 70's. She died on July 5, 1976. She is buried surrounded by her husband, daughter, Alma, and son-in-law, Jim Haynes, in Cape County Memorial Park Cemetery.
