William Enos Crites, called Enos, was the second son born to William Jefferson and Martha Altana Galloway Crites. His older brother did not survive childhood. When Enos was sixteen years old, his father died. His mother chose to continue running the farm with the help of Enos.

Enos remained a farmer all of his life. He was married three times. His first wife, Mamie (Maymie) Brown Crites, died shortly after the birth of their seventh child. Four of these children survived. Enos was briefly married a second time to Annie Fraysier Poe. This second marriage ended in divorce. He was married a third time to Minnie Ethel Umfleet Bird. They were married thirteen years and had two children
