RUSSELL BENDER
Russell G. Bender, 87, of West Pitt Street, Bedford, died Sunday, April 26, 1998, at UPMC Bedford Memorial.
He was born Feb. 15, 1911, in Claysburg, a son of the late Benjamin Harrison and Cleo (Crissman) Bender.
He was first married to Ruth Ann Walker Bender, who preceded him in death March 14, 1953.
In 1958, he married Edith (Brightbill) Madore, who survives along with a son, Russell G. Bender Jr., married to the former Marge Blanda, of Aston; two step-daughters, Elizabeth Madore Smouse, wife of the late Thomas Smouse, of Texas and Eleanor Madore, wife of James Dyke, of Stockton, Calif.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by a brother, Vernon Bender of Pleasantville; and four sisters, Ann Stutzman of New Holland; Sara Bauer of Pittsburgh; Louise Barnhart of Johnstown; and Pauline Boyko of Salem, N.H.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Orin and Wayne Bender; a
sister, Rena Clark; and a step-son, Francis Madore, husband of Leafy Madore of Bedford.
Mr. Bender was of the Protestant faith.
He was an avid hunter and sportsman and was a life member of the Chestnut Ridge Gun Club.
He retired in 1973 from the Reynoldsdale State Fish Hatchery after 46 years.
Funeral service: 11 am Wednesday at the Timothy A Berkebile Funeral Home, Bedford, with the Rev. Robert S. Hinrichsen officiating.
Burial in Pleasantville Cemetery.
Friends will be received 7 to 9 pm Tuesday at the funeral home.
