Orin Ray Bender was born 14 December 1908 in Osterburg, East St. Clair Twp., Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He was the first child of Benjamin Harrison "Harry" Bender, age 20 and Cleo Margaret (Crissman) Bender, age 19. He would end up being the eldest of the couple's nine children they had over a 19 year span.

In 1910, Orin and his parents, Harry and Cleo Bender were living in King Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania.

On 15 Feb 1911, at the age of 2, Orin became a big brother to Russell Glenn Bender. Russell was born in Claysburg, Pennsylvania.

At the age of 4, Orin became a big brother again, this time to a little sister, his parents named Rena Pearl Bender. Rena Pearl was born 13 August 1913 in Reynoldsdale, Bedford County, Pennsylvania.

By the age of 7, Orin got another sister, Anna Arminta "Annie" Bender. Annie was born on 11 January 1916.

When Orin was 9 years old, his parents had another little girl added to the Bender family. Sara Alice Bender was born 20 April 1918 in Claysburg, Pennsylvania.

Orin Ray, was 10 years old and probably read newspaper accounts about the Paris Peace Conference in January 1919 while living in Greenfield, Pennsylvania.

In 1920, Orin was living in Greenfield Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania on the Claysburg State Road. Those living in the house hold were: his father -Harry Bender, 31; his mother-Cleo Bender, 30; Orin Bender, 11; his brother -Russell Bender, 8; his sister- Rena Bender, 6; his sister - Annie Bender, 3; his sister - Sara Bender, age 1; and his uncle Chester, age 18. His father Harry was working as a moulder in the Brick Yard at General Refractories in Claysburg. Orin and his brother Russell were attending school, while Rena, Annie and Sara were at home with their mother. Harry's brother, Chester was working as a laborer at the Brickyard. Chester is listed as Chester Crumb in the 1910 Census being the grandson of Harry's parents. They most likely raised him as their own and that is probably why in the 1920 census, Harry has him listed as being a brother , Chester Bender, instead of a nephew.

Orin's sister Louise E Bender was born on 25 May 1922, in New Paris, Pennsylvania, when Orin Ray was 13 years old.

His sister Pauline G was born on 21 March 1924, in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, when Orin was 15 years old.

Orin finally got another brother, Vernon Harry Bender. Vernon was born on 7 September 1927, in Spring Meadow, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, when he was 18 years old.

At around this time Orin was involved in some type of romantic relationship with Carrie Marguerite Feaster, who was 16 years old. They never would be married but Carrie did became pregnant with Orin's child.

On 12 Jun 1928, Orin enlisted in the Army. Which was 4 months before his child would be born.

The last sibling to be born into the Bender family was Thomas Wayne Bender. Wayne as he was usually called by the family was born on 27 August 1928, in East Saint Clair Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, when Orin Ray was 19 years old.

Carrie Marguerite Feaster was 16 years old she gave birth to a son. She named their son Ned Eugene Feaster. Ned was born on 16 October 1928, in Fishertown, Pennsylvania. Ned lived with and was raised by his grandparents Sherman and Mary Feaster. In the early to mid 1930's Carrie was married to Mark William MacGregor and she had two more sons, with Mark, while Ned continued to live with his grandparents.

On the 1930 Census taken on 12 Apr 1930. Orin is listed as living at a Military Reservation Fort Shaffer, in a part of Honolulu, Honolulu, Hawaii Territory, the Island of Oahu. His occupation as being a soldier in the U.S. Army. He was single, about 21 years old.

On 26 Nov 1930 there was an article written in the Bedford Gazette Newspaper stating that Private Orin R. Bender, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Bender of Cessna, is now at Fort McDowell, Calif., awaiting his reassignment after serving two years at Fort Shaffer, Hawaii.

LOCAL SOLDIER BOY AT FT. McDOWELL, CAL

Private Orin R. Bender, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Bender, Cessna, Pa., is now at Fort McDowell, California, awaiting his reassignment after having served two years at Fort Shaffer, Hawaii, with Battery A. 64th Coast Artillery.

Fort McDowell is the location of the Overseas Discharge and Replacement Depot of the Army where soldiers on their way to the insular possessions are clothed and equipped, and given basic military training, while awaiting sailing of the transports. It is situated on Angel Island in San Francisco Bay, and the trip to the city is made by the government harbor boat in half and hour. As many as twenty-five hundred placements or men for discharge are frequently cared for at Fort McDowell at one time.

Private Bender enlisted on June 12, 1928, for Coast Artillery Hawaii and sailed for Hawaii June 28, 1928, after an enjoyable voyage down the East Coast around through the Panama Canal. He visited many points of interest while in the Islands including the famous volcano and Waikiki Beach. He enlisted in the Army through a desire for travel and adventure and during his time in the Service has become much interested in Army methods and intends to reenlist at the expiration of his present enlistment, at which time he intends to take a furlough and visit his parents.

Private Bender states that he expects to be stationed at Fort McDowell, Angel Island, California for about two months and would be very pleased to hear from his friends at Cessna and Bedford.

Orin lived in California since 1934, and moved to Sonoma County about 1960. He was the proprietor of a retail clothing store.

Orin married Gladys O'Donnell in October 1934, in California. They had a daughter, they named Dixie Lee Bender about 1937. Orin and Gladys were divorced before 1940.

16 Oct 1940 in California, Orin filled out his registration card for the Draft for World War II.

On 31 December 1940 in California, Orin Ray Bender married Virginia Parmalee Turney.

In September 1954, Orin came back to Bedford County, Pennsylvania for a family reunion.

4 Oct 1970 in Mount Vernon, Posey, Indiana, Orin's brother Thomas Wayne Bender died unexpectedly due to an accident.

6 Sept 1975, Orin's father, Benjamin Harrison "Harry" Bender passed away in Johnstown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania.

At the age of 70, Orin's first born child, Ned Eugene Feaster passes away at the age of 50. Ned died on 23 Sep 1979 in Windber, Somerset, Pennsylvania.

On 27 October 1980 at his home in Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California, Orin Ray Bender passed away.

Orin R, Bender, 71, of Santa Rosa, California, formerly of New Paris RD, died Monday, October 27, 1980, at his home.

He was born December 14, 1908 in Bedford County, a son of the late Harry Bender and Cleo (Crissman) Bender, of Pennknoll Village, Everett, RD; who survives.

Surviving in addition to his mother, is his widow, the former Virginia Turney, one daughter, Dixie Lee, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and these brothers and sisters: Russell, of Bedford; Mrs. Rena Clark of New Paris RD; Mrs. Ann Stutzman, of Chester, Pa; Mrs. Sara Bauer, of New Paris RD; Mrs. Louise Barnhart, of Johnstown; Mrs. Pauline Boyko, of Salem, New Hampshire; and Vernon of Pleasantville.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1975, a son Ned in 1979 and a brother Wayne in 1972.

Mr. Bender was a U.S. Army Veteran.

Graveside Service: Friday, October 31, at 2 pm at the Fishertown Cemetery, with Rev. James Rank officiating.

Friends will be received at the Jack Geisel Funeral Home in Pleasantville on Thursday evening from 7 to 9 pm

Services for Orin Ray Bender, 71, who died Monday at his Santa Rosa home after a long illness, will be held in Pennsylvania.

A native of Pennsylvania, he lived in California since 1934, and moved to Sonoma County 20 years ago. He was the proprietor of a retail clothing store.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Bender, Santa Rosa; his daughter, Dixie Lee Coolish, Burlingame, and six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was the brother of Pauline Boyko, New Hampshire, and Russell Bender, Rena Clark, Ann Stutzman, Sara Bauer, Vernon Bender and Louise Barnhart, all of Pennsylvania.

Services will be at Geisel Funeral Home in Alum Bank, Penn., followed by burial at Fishertown Cemetery.

Arrangements were made by Daniels Chapel of the Roses.

Memorial donations to the Home Hospice of Sonoma County, American Cancer Society or a favorite charity are preferred by the family.
