Barbara was born in the village of Reitzendorf in what was then the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1839 - probably the daughter of Mary Schruefer. Barbara and her sister and mother emigrated to Baltimore, Maryland. Barbara Schruefer married Andrew Herbert on November 23, 1858 at St. James Catholic Church according to church records. Barbara and Andrew were both nineteen years old. The Herberts had nine children although Andrew, Charles, Conrad, John, Mary Elizabeth, and Theresia died as children and are buried with them at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery. The two Herbert children to live to adulthood were sons George (born on November 18, 1861) and Nicholas (born on July 28, 1871).
