Nick Herbert was born in 1871 - the son of Andrew and Barbara Schruefer Herbert. Nick Herbert married Maggie Christner circa 1896. They had five children - had five children - Raymond (1897-1958), Virginia (1900-1970), Nicholas Jr. (1904 - 1979), Dorothy (1907 - 1995), and Carroll (1911-1979).

Nick was the first Grand Knight of the Cardinal Gibbons Council Knights of Columbus of Baltimore, Maryland. The election of the first council officers was held on January 28, 1924 at St. Michaels Church in Overlea, Maryland. On February 8, 1924, the officers were installed and a First Degree was conferred on a class of thirty-four candidates with over 100 men in attendance.

Nick was working as a clerk in the 1930 U.S. Census. His son Raymond worked as a clerk, daughter Virginia was a stenographer and son Carroll was a clerk at that time. They were living at 4012 Fleetwood Avenue in Overlea in Baltimore County.

Nick was a favorite relative of his first cousin once removed Barbara McCart Adelhardt.

Nick Herbert died on February 19, 1941 at age 69. He was buried at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery.
