James migrated with his parents and siblings from Anson County, North Carolina to Choctaw Co. Alabama about 1840.
He married Susan Freeland Nov.9, 1844 in Lauderdale Co. Mississippi. Their marriage was the 173rd marriage recorded in Lauderdale County. (Laud. Co. Dept. of Archives and History bk."A") James and Susan resided in Choctaw Co. Alabama at the time of their marriage and moved to Whistler, Mobile Co. Ala. before 1870 where he worked in the Mobile & Ohio R.R. shops. His sisters Eliza Tew and Lucy Freeland also moved to Whistler where their husbands also worked and resided in Whistler. William, a brother, was a merchant in the town and died in the 1870s. William's wife Wealthy, Eliza and Lucy's family remained in Whistler.
Befoe 1880 James, Susan & their children along with a nephew William David Baucum son of William & Wealthy Baucum moved from Whistler, Alabama to the Poplar Springs, Wickware area of Newton County, Mississippi. Some descendants of these families are still living in Newton and surrounding counties.
