Alvin was the son of Sandy Washington Murphy and his wife Mary L LaBarrer. He was married first to Constance Smith and second to Sara Johnson.

Alvin Edward Murphy, 90, went to be with the Lord Feb. 26, 2010. He was born in Norfolk March 4, 1919.
He was preceded in death by his beloved first wife, Constance Smith Murphy, and his recently deceased wife, Sara Johnson Murphy. He was also preceded in death by his daughters, Carolyn Kildruff of Sarasota, Fla., Jean Harris of Chesapeake and deceased son, Warren Murphy of Chesapeake. He and Sara moved to Pollard, Ala., in 2007 to live near his stepdaughter, Louise Johnson (Tony) Lambeth.
He leaves behind a son, Walter Robert (Jackie) of Las Vegas, Nev,; stepsons, Myron (Theresa) Johnson and William Johnson of Richmond, Va.; a brother, Willard Murphy of Norfolk; two sisters, Leona (Otis) Tatem of Virginia Beach and Jocelyn Murphy of Norfolk. He had 26 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren.
Carolyn Lambeth of Pollard, Ala., was his dear friend and caregiver. He was a member of Tidewater Baptist Temple in Chesapeake and Catawba Springs Baptist Church in Alabama.
The funeral will be conducted Wednesday, March 3, at noon where the family will greet friends at the church one hour before the service at Tidewater Baptist Temple, 1316 Campostella Road, Chesapeake, with Pastors Charles Pearson and Paul Hawkins officiating. Graveside service to follow at Rosewood Memorial Park, 631 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach.
Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel, 524 Cedar Road, Chesapeake, is in charge.
