Dr. Van Buren Martin, 75 years old, physician and surgeon in charge of Martin Sanatorium, and alderman of Ward One of Picayune, died early Friday morning in Touro Infirmary in New Orleans, where he had been a patient.
Dr. Martin, who had been a resident of Picayune for more than 25 years, was active in civic and business circles. He was the examining physician for the selective service system for local draft board No. 1 of Pearl River county, member of the board of stewards of the First Methodist church, former president of the Rotary club, former bank director, in addition to being a member of the American Medical Association and Mississippi Medical and Hospital Association. He was actively associated with his profession until about one month ago.
Dr. Martin's body lay in state in the chapel of the McDonald Funeral Home until Sunday. Funeral services were conducted in the First Methodist church at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, with the Rev. J. H. Morrow, pastor, in charge. Interment was in the Palestine cemetery, three miles west of Picayune.
Dr. Martin was born at Bogue Chitto, the son of A. J. Martin and Mrs. Sarah Gwinn Martin.
Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Rosa Simmons Martin; four children, Mrs. Mavis Vaughn, Picayune pharmacist, Beverly Martin of Mobile, Ala., Mrs. Sue Godard of Picayune, and Miss Sue Martin, Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, Fort Meade, Md.; and five brothers, Thomas and A. C. Martin of McComb, W. A. Martin, Hollandale, R. L. Martin, Hammond, La., and E/F. V. Martin, Indianapolis, Ind.
