John and Philomena Stephan Westhoff lived a year after their marriage in Schuyler Co. Mo. where their first child was born. Moved to Crawford Co. Kansas, Grant Twp. in 1869. He was farmer and located 6 miles east of St. Paul, Kansas.
Married 16 Jun 1867 Ottumwa, Wapello, Iowa.
Married same day in Iowa with Adam J. Stephan & Margaret Gristy Shook , Philomena's brother, and Philip E. Stephan & Rhoda Ann Gristy, also Philomena's brother.
Triple wedding.
John Westhoff died Friday morning, 17 Nov 1899 at about 5 o'clock, age 57 years. He had not been complaining any and was up at 4am and looked at the rain storm that was passing over. He went back to bed and soon dropped off to sleep. After he had slept awhile he gave a heavy groan. His wife tried to wake him but could not. She at once called the children but before they got to the bed he had passed away. He died of heart disease. He was one of the old settlers and was an honest and industrious citizen. Funeral was conducted by Father Verdan. Mr. Westhoff's death was very sudden and unexpected.
