James Westhoff was a blacksmith. Lived in Iowa from 1864 to 1868 and in Kansas by 1871. He was of average height, about 5'6'' inches tall. Had sandy hair, blue eyes and a mustache on his upper lip. Lived on a farm 4 or 5 miles southeast of Walnut, Kansas. Several years before his death he moved to Walnut and after his wife died he lived with his children.
Died Apr 6th 1913 at 11:20a at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles LaForge, living 3 miles east of Walnut, age 77 years old. Died very suddenly of heart failure.
Funeral services were held at the Catholic Church Tuesday morning, conducted by Rev. J.J. O'Brien and his mortal remains were laid to rest in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Walnut, Crawford, Kansas.
He was one of the old settlers. Came to Kansas over 40 years ago and located in St. Paul. A few years later he bought a farm 4 or 5 miles southeast of Walnut. He was well liked. (Walnut Eagle, Crawford Co. Ks Thursday April 10, 1913, page 2 col. 1.
