During the Civil War, his large physical stature, combined with his youthful inexperience, placed him in extreme jeopardy from roving bands of bushwackers in the hills of northwest Arkansas if he had remained at home. Therefore, he rode along with his father in several campaigns with Co. A, 2nd Ark Inf Vols, Union Army, commanded by his father, Capt. C.C. Casey.
