While engaged in field labor in the area of the Carden Bottoms, near Russellville, Jim became ill, possibly with a ruptured appendix, and died. The family opted to bury him at Pisgah in lieu of freighting his body all the way back to the family farm on Fallingwater Creek near the Searcy-Newton County line.
