Vadie was born to J.R. Davis and Margaret Weeks. She married William Mangrum, and the union produced 9 children.

Their 7th child, Trudy, accidently fell while playing outside, and hit her head on a cast iron wood stove door laying in the yard. Trudy developed a "spinal meningitis" type symptom that caused her death a few days later. After that, Vadie lost interest in almost everything.

William and Vadie's 9th child died 1 hour after being born, and Vadie let her daughter, Myrtis, name the baby: Mary Lois. Vadie died of pneumonia the next day. They were buried together, with Vadie holding Mary in her arms.
