Rites Friday For Pioneer

Funeral services for John Byron "Barney" Andress, 54, of 507 Austin, will be at 10 a.m. Friday from the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. James G. Glenn, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Raton, N.M., officiating and the Rev. Carlton Thomson, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, assisting.

Andress, the owner-manager of the Phillips Building, died at his office there Wednesday. Andress was a City Commissioner of Borger from 1939 to 1940 and Mayor of Borger from 1940 through April of 1942.

A pioneer resident of the city coming here Feb. 1, 1927 as a clerk in Hatcher's Drug Store. He later became manager-owner of Barney's Drug Store which he managed until he sold his interests in 1952.

Except for a period of study at the Fort Worth Pharmaceutical School Andress lived in Borger some 44 years.

Andress was a director of Panhandle Bank & Trust and was an active member of the Rotary Club for many years and was a long time sponsor of the Hutchinson County Future Farmers of America and the 4-H Club. He was also very active in area politics serving as campaign manager for former state representative Fritz Thompson and former congressman Walter Rogers.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn of the home; one son, Dr. John Barney Andress of Borger; one daughter Mrs. Cathy Duggar of Dell City; one brother Joe Andress of Phillips; five sisters, Jimmie Andress and Mrs. Gene Ledie, both of Borger, Mrs. Bill McCulley of Oklahoma City, Mrs. Paul Williams of Perryton, Mrs. Scott Hatcher of Amarillo; one granddaughter and three grandsons.

Casketbearers will be Coon Jeffers, Edgar Britain, Dave Warren, Fritz Thompson, Fritz Epps, Robert Wilson, David Thompson, Bill Love.

Honorary casketbearers will be officers and directors of Panhandle Bank & Trust, and Q. Mitani, Guy Crawford, Dr. M.M. Stephens, B.S. Hinds, G.W. McCullough and W.W. Massad.
