Colorado Springs, Colo. - Maj John Monroe Jr., 80, Colorado Springs, Colo., died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004.

Mr. Monroe was born April 23, 1924 in Geneseo, Kan. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and Korea, retiring after 21 years. As a second career, he worked as a safety officer with civil service for 20 years.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gayland "Gary" L.

Survivors include his wife, Anna M., of Colorado Springs; a daughter, Ramona L. "Mickey" Monroe; a son, Ronald L. "Rick" Monroe; four brothers, Raymond, Bruce, Orville and Francis; two sisters, Mary Cormeny and Ruth Garnet Hicks; two grandsons; and a great-granddaughter.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home, 1730 East Mountain Blvd, Colorado Springs, Colo. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Geneseo Cemetery, Geneseo, Kan., with military honors by Fort Riley.
