Dora Alice Criswell Newkirk

Dora Alice Criswell Newkirk was born in the small town of Trenton, Missouri, on September 30, 1895. Her family moved to Oklahoma in a horse and wagon when she was five. Dora had several jobs throughtout her lifetime. One of these, as a young girl, included picking cotton. When she was a young teen, she returned to Missouri and did housework to earn money. She married Urie Clyde Newkirk on January 3, 1918, while he was a medic in the army during WW I. They were married on the weekend and then he was back on duty the following Monday. A son David was born in February 1920. Blanche came along in 1921, but only lived for three months. Russell followed years later in 1928. Some of his earliest memories included shirts drying on hangers throughout their home. Dora took in laundry for six families.

In 1943, Dora and Russ moved to California and lived with her sister Mary, who had helped her many times through the years. She got a job at Lockheed till WWII ended, and then worked for Catalina Mills until 1963 when she retired.

Her son David died in an accident while in the Naval Air Corps in 1945, and Urie passed away in 1966. Dora enjoyed many new experiences in her older years. Some of these included learning to drive, swimming lessons, and trips to Alaska, Europe and Hawaii. She kept an apartment to age 98, then moved to the Tahoe area to be near her son Russell, until her death at 101. She is survived by her son Russell, four grandcildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
