Solomon Lee Van Meter was the youngest son of Solomon Van Meter (1818–1859) and his wife Martha C. Prewitt (1830–1894).

He was married 19 Sep 1883 to Miss Evaline Trent Swoope (1864–1899) of Swoope's Depot, Augusta Co., VA., daughter of Col. George Washington Swoope Jr (1832–1887) and Margaret Jane Baylor (1829–1890).

Solomon and Evie had 5 children:

1) George Swoope Van Meter (1885–1885)

2) Solomon Lee Van Meter, Jr. (1888–1937) h/o Lois Chapin

3) Jacob Baylor Van Meter "Baylor" (1891–1945) h/o Edith C. Berryman

4) Margaret Baylor Van Meter (1894–1994) w/o Ellison H. Capers

5) Evelyn Trent Van Meter (1896–1964) w/o Brownell Berryman (he was brother of Edith Berryman who married Baylor Van Meter)

Of these children, only Evelyn was born in Shenandoah Hall, the others were born in a cabin on the farm while the main house was being built [reported by daughter Margaret to her daughter Margie].

Evie died in 1899 just before her 35th birthday.

Solomon remarried in April 1904 to Miss Pauline Helm Hardin (1873–1936), d/o Judge Mordecai Robert Hardin (1826–1875) and his wife Susan Catherine "Kate T" Thurman (1839–1916). Miss Hardin was the highly respected Kentucky State Librarian. Two children were born of this marriage:

6) Robert Hardin Van Meter (1905–1979) h/o Nancy Rubel Combs 1906–1939 and Mary Miller Spears 1908–1983.

7) Rebecca Cunningham Van Meter (1910-2011) never married.

Fayette County farmer and landowner, died at his home "Fairlawn" on N. Broadway this morning at 12:15 o'clock, following an illness of several weeks.
Mr. VanMeter was one of the outstanding citizens of Fayette County; and in addition to representing this county in the state legislature about 25 years ago, was prominent in civic, agricultural and stock-raising activities. For a number of years he owned and operated a large farm on the Bryan station pike, near Lexington, which was noted throughout Kentucky as a nursery of fine beef cattle and pure bred sheep and where he and his wife dispensed a princely hospitality...(more)
