JOHN MARTIN ZUENDEL
10-14-1861 -- 2-23-1926

Hon. John Martin Zuendel, associate Judge of Forest Co., passed away at his home at Starr at 8:00 PM Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1926, after a long illness from a cancerous growth on his face. He had been in failing health for some time and was confined to his bed for 4 weeks preceding his death.

He was born at Starr, Oct. 14, 1861, the son of Henry and Christina Zuendel, pioneers in that section of German Hill. He grew to manhood there and was united in marriage with Miss Katherine Ledebur, at Tionesta on July 3, 1890, who survives. To this union 6 children were born - one son, Raymond, dying in infancy; Floyd, Glenn, Lester, Mrs. Curtis Dickrager and Miss Gladys, all of Starr. Also surviving are 1 nephew, Harl, who was taken into his home in infancy; 2 brothers, George of Cooper Tract, Henry of Starr; and 2 sisters, Miss Mary and Miss Elizabeth of Starr.

Mr. Zuendel was a member of Tionesta Lodge #369 I.O.O.F., and was a farmer by occupation. He was for nearly 30 years collector of taxes and assessor of Kingsley twp. He was elected county commissioner on the Republican ticket in 1909 and served for 3 years. In 1923 he was elected associate judge on the Republican ticket and was serving his 3rd year of a 6 year term. He was of a jovial disposition, very industrious and had made a host of friends who held him in high esteem. He always took a marked interest in public affairs of the twp. and county and was faithful to every duty imposed upon him. The community loses a good neighbor and the family a kind and loving husband and father.

Funeral services in his memory were held in the family home at 2:00 PM Friday, the Rev. Fred Smith of Tidioute officiating. A large number of friends gathered to pay their respect to him. Interment was made in the Zuendel cemetery at the Evangelical church, the pallbearers being the following brothers from the Tionesta Lodge: E. L. Dewoody, W. H. Hood, C. A. Childs, Frank Ellis, Charles Carlson and K. A. Haslet.
