Civil War Union Brevet Major General, Dakota Territorial Governor. Served in the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 31st Illinois Volunteer Infantry. On March 13, 1865 he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers for "gallant and meritorious services during the war", and Major General, US Volunteers for "gallant and meritorious services in the field during the war". After the war he served as Governor of the Dakota Territory from 1872 until his assassination in September 1873. He was a member of the famous "Fighting McCooks", who sent 13 family members into the Union Army. His brothers were Major General Alexander McCook, Brigadier General Daniel McCook Jr, and Brigadier General Robert L. McCook. His first cousin was Bvt. Brigadier General Anson McCook.
