Civil War Soldier, a member of Company F, 2nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry
One of the "Fighting McCooks", Charles, though advised by his father Daniel to surrender, refused and fought to the death at Bull Run. His father and several others of the McCook family were also killed in the war.
From P Fazzini :A freshman of Kenyon College Ohio; declined a Lieutenant's commission in the Regular army offered by Secretary of war Stanton as he preffered to volunteer. Came upon his father who had volunteered as a nurse at a field hospital and stopped to help his father. going to join his regiment he was surrounded by an officer and members of the Virginia "Black Horse" cavalry. He disabled the officer with his musket and kept the others at bay with a bayonet. When his father called on him to surrender-because the odds were against him-he replied "Father, I will never surrender to a rebel" before he was killed. {Howe's History}
