US Naval Officer. A graduate of the Naval Academy, he was a member of the Ohio family called "the Fighting McCooks" because seventeen of them served in the Civil War as Union soldiers, sailors, chaplains and doctors. J. James McCook was a Midshipman on the USS Delaware when he died of yellow fever off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. In his autobiography Admiral Farragut paid tribute to McCook's character and proficiency.
