American Civil War Union Army Officer. He was known for being the head of the "Tribe of Dan" of the Fighting McCooks, a fighting unit in the American Civil War. A lawyer prior to the war, he and his brother were the father of 13 sons, who all fought for the Union. Unlike many Democrats, McCook sided with the Union at the start of the war. For this, he is recognized as a 63-year-old Union soldier. He lost a son at the First Battle of Bull Run and later another son after the Battle of Shiloh. He was mortally wounded during the Battle of Buffington Island also known as the St. George's Creek Skirmish, near Portland, Ohio. He was buried with full military honors. In 1970 his home was recognized on the list of National Historical Places.
