Obituary in The Bienville Democrat October 16. 1930:
J.H. Thurmond, 72, was called to his reward last Sunday, passing away at his home in Mt. Lebanon where he had spent the greater portion of his 72 years on earth. Mr. Thurmond was born and reared in Mt. Lebanon, where he grew to manhood and became one of the parish's most prominent and progressive men during the active days of his life. About six years ago his health failed and for the past two years he has been an invalid, but during all the days of his suffering he never ceased to be optimistic.

Until his health failed him, Mr. Thurmond followed the occupation of farming, and was considered one of the most successful farmers in the entire parish. He served as a member of the police jury several terms and was otherwise active in public affairs. He was a devout Christian, a member of the Mt. Lebanon Church and a constant worker for the cause of his Lord and Master.

Funeral services were held at the Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church Monday afternoon, the Reverends J.T. Sale and A.J. Smith officiating. The Rev. Mr. Sale, the deceased's pastor, used a very appropriate subject, "Blessed are the Dead Who Die in the Lord." Interment was in the Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were in charge of the S.A. Conger undertaking establishment.

Surviving are his widow; two sons, Albert and John Thurmond of Kansas City; one daughter, Mrs. James Cole of Shreveport; two brothers, C.C. Thurmond of Oil City and W.P. Thurmond of Shreveport; two grandchildren and numerous other relatives.
