Robert was born at home in Camas Valley on Aug 1, 1912 to Jesse Lerangel & Etta Mae Kirkendall. He attended Camas Valley School until he was 15 when he left school to go to work at Evans Products in Coos Bay. There he met his future wife, Mary Virginia Kutcher. They were married Oct 30, 1933 in Roseburg, OR. The couple lived in Coos Bay until 1954 when they returned to Robert's hometown of Camas Valley and have lived on part of the original James Allen Kirkendall homestead. Robert became a member of the Lumber and Sawmill Union Local 2949 on 8 Mar 1958 and remained a lifetime member. He retired from Roseburg Forest Products in 1977 at the age of 65. After retirement he ran his Christmas tree farm for several years.
Robert loved the outdoors; hunting, fishing, and just watching the wildlife.
He is survived by his wife of 76 years, Mary Virginia Kirkendall; 1 son, Kenneth Kirkendall; 1 daughter, Helen Gerke; 4 grandsons, Tony, Trent, James, & Robert; 6 granddaughters, Tracy, Marie, Karin, Barbara, Kristine, & Regina; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse & Etta Mae Kirkendall; 4 brothers, Elmer, Jesse Floyd, Joseph, & an unnamed baby boy; 7 sisters, Ethel, Aleta, Myrtle, Grace, Mable, Josie, & Florence; 1 son, Edward.
