THE OBITUARY OF THE REVEREND J. S. BYBEE
Heaven's gates swung open and the Lord sent his angels to bear the soul of James Sherman Bybee to his eternal resting place in his home at 4:30 Tuesday, October 3, 1972 due to a heart attack, at the age of 78 years 7 months and 17 days.
He was born near Preston, Missouri on February 16, 1894, the son of Buford and Elizabeth Bybee. She spent his entire life in Hickory and adjoining counties. He attended the New Haven Elementary School at Preston, Missouri and later in life attended the academy at Southwest Baptist College at Bolivar, Missouri.
At the age of 18 years, he was saved on his horse as he returned home after attending a revival meeting at the Methodist Church in Preston, Missouri on November 9, 1913.
On August 20, 1916, he was married to Nona Pearl McCain and to this union were born three sons, Woodford and Raymond of Bolivar, Missouri, Hobart of Polk, Missouri and a daughter, Geraldine Rogers of Bolivar, Missouri.
At the age of 30 years, God laid his hand on him to preach the gospel and in 1925; he was ordained in the Little Niangua Baptist church, Preston, Missouri. He spent 38 years of his life serving the Lord in which he rendered his life to Christ preaching the gospel and winning the lost to Jesus, never wavering from the truth but stood firm to the last.
On January 9, 1957, the Lord called his companion to her heavenly home leaving his life vacant and lonely. In August 1957, he married Lenora Clark of whom the Lord only spared a few years. In 1962, he was married to Fern Breshears Henderson who survives his passing. Together they spent 10 years in service for the Lord.
He belonged to the South New Home Missionary Baptist Church and gave all his talent and support to the church. He endured many hardships while preaching the gospel but he weathered the storms without complaining.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Fern, his three sons and daughter, three daughters-in-law; a son-in-law, nine grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; also three brothers, Curg of Urbana, Dewey of Cross Timbers and Homer of Kansas City; three sisters, Cletis Stevens of Warrensburg, Eunice Hood of Polk and Gladys Breshears of Edwards, Missouri; also a step-son, Robert Henderson and his wife and one step-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, two brothers and one sister-in-law. He will be sadly missed by his entire family and a host of relatives and friends.
He had many experiences in life that God revealed to him. Even while in the hospital and after returning home, he still had the zeal to preach the gospel.
Dear Dad, you have fought the good fight, you have kept the faith, and have now gone to that eternal home which God has prepared for those who love him.
Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 6, 1972 at 2 PM at the Mount View Baptist Church at Polk, MO with Rev. Lee Howard officiating. Music was by the Polk choir. Organist was Mrs. Corene Jones. Casket bearers, Leroy Simpson, Leon Simpson, Donald Bybee, James Bybee, John Jenkins, Danny Notewear. Burial was in Polk Cemetery under direction of the Vaughan Funeral Home of Urbana, MO.
