John was born July 10, 1918 in Huntington, Utah to Fanny and John Milton Harper.
He married Josephine Niederiaufner on May 9, 1944 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He joined the Army and served with the 75th Field Artillery in the Aleutian Islands and Italy during World War II. He was honored with many metals of which he was very proud.
He spent much of his career as a carpenter or construction foreman. He loved to work with wood. This love evolved to a hobby in wood turning. He produced many, many beautiful turned pieces that he shared with family and friends. He passed this love of wood turning to many of his children, grandchildren, and even some of his great-grandchildren who joined him in his hobby.
John is survived by his brother Stan Harper and sister Marice Wilcox; his children Michael R. Harper (Sheila), Gregory L. Harper (Colleen), Kathleen Smith (Kenneth), and Judith Greer (Bryce); nine grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Josephine, and his brothers Rey, Reese, Vernon, and Larry.
Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery, 1950 East Dimple Dell Road (10600 South), Sandy, Utah. Family and friends are welcome to attend the graveside service and offer their remembrances if they should desire.
After the services, please join us for a celebration of his life at the clubhouse near his home at 250 East 11400 South (11352 South Crescentwood Drive, Sandy, UT).
