During the years following his graduation, he was assigned to frontier duty with the 21st Infantry at Camp Harney, Oregon, Fort Boise, Idaho, Fort Vancouver, Washington, Fort Sidney, Nebraska, Fort DuChesne, Utah, Forts McKinney and Bridger in Wyoming, Fort Douglas, Utah, and Fort Randall, South Dakota. He received promotions to First Lieutenant in 1877 and to Captain in 1888. He married his wife Julia Leighton in October, 1877 while stationed at Fort Boise, Idaho.
In 1892 he returned to New York with an assignment at Fort Porter and then at Plattsburg Barracks. In 1898 he participated in the battle of San Juan, Cuba in the siege and operations against Santiago.
Promoted to Major in 1899, he was assigned as Commander of Fort Wood, New York. In 1900, he was assigned command of the 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry in the Philippines. Receiving a promotion to Lt Colonel in 1901, and to Colonel in 1903, he served as a Regimental Commander in various assignments in California, Montana, the Phillipines, Michigan, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and Galveston, Texas. In his final assignment prior to his retirement on February 6th, 1915, he commanded the 5th Brigade, 2nd Division, 7th Infantry in Vera Cruz, Mexico, having served over 40 years in the Army.
