JOHN S. BENWAY
John S. Benway, son of Harry and Mary Benway, was born November 5, 1918, at Allerton, Iowa, and died November 3, 1947, at Waterloo, from injuries received in a fall while at work for Jens Olesen &Sons Construction Company.
He spent the early part of his life in Chariton where he was graduated from the Chariton high school. A veteran of World War II, he served as a staff sergeant with the Army, spending three years in the European Theater of Operations.
On November 3, 1945, he was married to Miss Hazel P. Day. Shortly after his marriage they moved to Waterloo, where he was employed in construction work.
He was an ardent church worker and at the time of his death was secretary of his Sunday school class.
Survivors in addition to his wife, are his parents, six brothers, Willard, Rex, Harold and Harvey of Chariton; Lester of Ottumwa; and Bud, of Ogden, Utah; and two sisters, Alice of Des Moines, and Mayme, at home, and a large circle of friends and relatives who will mourn his untimely passing.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 5, 1947, at Waterloo and at 3:30 p.m. in the afternoon of the same day at the Chariton Church of the Nazarene. The Rev. Aleck Ulmet officiated. Burial was made in the Chariton cemetery.
