Walter F. Gilman was born in Dane County, Wisconsin. He was the son of Mary R. nee Flatt and John F. Gilman, an attorney at law in Dane Co. The parents had immigrated from England and New York respectively.
He had 5 step siblings-Ellen, Edward, Edgar, Alice, MaryRuth(mother was Kathryn Gallagher); step sibling Mary H. Gilman was born and sadly died of small pox disease at 2 1/2 years in 1864. His older sibling Winfield was born in 1862. His aunt Maggie Flatt was in their home as well. The tragedy of losing his father occurred sometime before his birth in 1871.
He had several different jobs his first documented in Rio being a drug merchant, selling a kidney stone/ache reliever solution and relocated then to Stoughton working as a foreman in Wagons Co., and then was an inspector for Moline Wgn Co.
He lived with his mother throughout the years of his first marriage in 1888 until his first wife passing in 1894 and faithfully cared for her until her passing.
He married on September 24, 1919 in Berrien , Michigan. The ceremony took place at St Joseph's where his bride Adah L. Staniske, daughter of Louise nee Keil Staniske and Karl Staniske from Kaukauna, Wisconsin, was glad to join him in matrimony. Adah was one of eight children born who resided at Crooks Avenue in Kaukauna, Wisconsin.
Walter was 20 years older than Adah and he was 50 years old when they were blessed with daughter Lois. She was their only child. Walter had a maternal aunt Maggie Flatt living with them in 1920-30s in Stoughton, Wisconsin.
His daughter Lois married Ralph Frank, a special agent with the FBI and they moved to Middlesex, N.J. She gave him two known grand children Ralph Frank Jr. and a daughter Kristi Holzer(husband Amon Holzer) and 3 great grandchildren Mary, Grace and James Holzer who lived in New Jersey. Kristi was a very gifted vocalist who sang in the childrens opera in New York. She died an untimely death at a young 44 years of carcinoma of the lungs. Family history of work done by family niece historian Colleen indicated great grandchildren living in NJ is ongoing with the family.
