John Pollard Harvey was born 1811 according to family records in Ross County, Ohio. He came with his father, Robert, in 1830 to Tippecanoe County, Indiana. John filed on land in Shelby Township adjacent to the land his father had been awarded for his services during the War of 1812. In 1835 Robert past away and three years later in 1838 he and his younger brother, Joseph, traded farms. Joseph had inherited the land where the Harvey Cemetery is located today in Tippecanoe Township.

John was married to Elizabeth Archibald December 15, 1831, Tippecanoe Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana. She had been born in 1816, Wayne Township, Montgomery County, Ohio, the daughter of David Jr. and Rachel (McCormick) Archibald.

The September 16, 1849, the county court records show that while at a shooting match John was engaged in drinking too heavily and engaged in a fight. (Contrary to how the newspaper wrote the story). He was struck on the head with a fence post that eventually resulted in his death the following day. His assailant was charged with murdered.

After John's death Elizabeth attempted to manage the farm by having her brother share crop. She married a second time to a David Bryan on August 28,1852. Elizabeth died two years later on July 25, 1854, Tippecanoe, Indiana.

The children (except Joseph) that the couple had were dispersed amongst different family households until they grew up. Joseph P. Harvey (1835 - 1852); Rachel Ann Harvey (1838 - 1861) went to live with her aunt Mary Hays and her second husband Richard Gartrell Godman. They had inherited Augustine "Washington" Harvey's farm that was located just north of Ash Grove near and the rail road tracks. Eliza Jane Harvey (1841-1938); David P. Harvey (1844 - 1964); John Robert Harvey, (1848 - 1926) was placed with Elizabeth's sister, Paulina and John G. Smith who lived across the road and who had purchased David P. Harvey's farm.

Eliza Jane Harvey was always self-conscious of how her father had died leaving the family to survive the best that they could and would tell the story that her father had died in a train accident.
