Melvin was born April 18, 1922, in the Max area, the son of Robert and Hilda (Drefs) Bucholz. He attended the Ulich rural school northeast of Garrison. Melvin married Ella Mertz on Dec. 9, 1944, at Zion Lutheran Church, Bismarck. He farmed, did construction work on the Mandan Oil Refinery, worked for Kirschmann/Melroe Co. and retired after many years of working for Burleigh County as a heavy equipment operator.
Melvin loved music. He was a very talented self-taught musician and played accordion, guitar, banjo and piano. He loved to garden and grew tomatoes and radishes in every available space. He was a cap collector and had hundreds of caps from everywhere. After Melvin was unable to drive, he "cruised" town on his electric scooter and was often seen driving to Kirkwood Mall, where he loved to sit and visit with friends. Melvin loved his family and nothing could make him happier than when his family would come visit, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharron and Ron Crowley, Hazen, and Sally and Edmond Reinhart, Bismarck; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Eldon Bucholz, Strasburg, Robert and Linda Bucholz, Bismarck, and Kelvin and Janeen Bucholz, Rapid City, S.D.; 10 grandchildren, Melissa, Michelle, Nicole and her husband Thane Dockter, Kristen and her husband David Wick, Michael, Melanie, Andrea, John, Kelsey and Ashley; six great-grandchildren, Courtni, Jaci, Medora, Emmy, Corbin and Madelen; one sister, Adeline Jennings, Washburn; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Vernon and Mavis Bucholz, Bismarck, and Jerry and Ann Bucholz, Regan; and several nieces and nephews.
Melvin was preceded in death by his wife, Ella; his parents, Robert and Hilda Bucholz; his stepmother, Hilda Bucholz; one brother, Marlin Bucholz; and one brother-in-law, Carl Jennings.
We will miss you dad, grandpa and great-grandpa. You will always be our "Sunshine". You have left each of us here, but have taken part of us with you, and we'll see you and Mom someday.
