HANNAH "BABE" SHRIVER

Hannah Marie Watson was born Oct. 24, 1911, and passed away Nov. 4, 2000, from complications of a stroke at her daughter's home in Knoxville, Iowa.

She was born and raised the family home near Powersville, Mo., to Frederick Franklin Watson and Mary Anne Sharp. She grew up with four older sisters and a baby brother. Being named in honor of the mid-wife who assisted in her birth, Hannah soon adopted the nickname "Babe."

Through the years Babe attended Tinkham School where she graduated from the eighth grade. She soon went to work with her sister, Hattie, as a telephone operator in Powersville.

On Oct. 1, 1931, in Princeton, Mo., Babe was united in marriage to Ivan Earl Shriver. Together Ivan and Babe raised four children which was the beginning of a family tree that would leave behind 18 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. On Nov. 23, 1985, Ivan passed away at their home in Chariton, Iowa.

In 1955, Babe went to work at Baker's Nursing Home. She also spent a few summers at the Dairy Queen and in 1961, she went to work at the newly opened Lucas County Hospital. She is remembered by many as a nurse's aide in the nursery. Babe retired from the hospital in 1974 and many years later would become one of the first hostesses at Hardees.

Facing one of her greatest challenges, Babe worked to get her driver's license at the age of 75 for the first time. She was now able to drive to work, take friends out to eat for their birthday or drive the grandkids to get ice cream. Babe stopped working at Hardees in 1996 and spent her time making quilts for her children and grandchildren.

A very important part of Babe's life was the First United Methodist Church, daily scripture and God's word. She spent many hours being a part of Church Circles, Ladies Aide, the Birthday Club, the Hospital Auxiliary and RSVP.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Ivan; granddaughter, Kerry Lynne Shiver; and sisters, Hilda, Hattie, Hazel and Helen; and her brother, Harry.

Those loved ones left behind are her children: Larry and Linda Shriver of Chariton; Garry Shriver of Chariton; Jerry "Tub" and Sandy Shriver of Williamson; and Terry and Mary Thompson of Knoxville; grandchildren: Curt, Chris, Kathy, Chrissy, Courtney, Kay, Sheryl, Jerry Wayne, Tony, Cindy, Ed, Rick, Kim, Rodney, Larry Todd, Mari Kenna, Brady and Leann. She is also survived by many great and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at the First United Methodist Church in Chariton. Pastor Gary DeGeest officiated. Burial was in the Chariton Cemetery.

Serving as bearers were grandsons, Tony, Courtney and Jerry Wayne Shriver, Larry and Rodney Mumford and Brady Thompson. Honorary bearers were Ed, Rick, Chris and Curt Shriver.
