He was born near the Orleans Furnace, which his father owned, along Sugar Creek near Wyattville in Sugar Creek Borough.

After completing his education, he apprenticed in the office of Judge Parker of Bowling Green, Ohio reading law with him. He was admitted to the Ohio bar, becoming a lawyer. He, however, never practiced the profession. He instead devoted his life's work to farming.

He moved with his young family from Bowling Green, Wood County, Ohio to Ft. Calhoun, Washington County, Nebraska in 1884 and continued to farm. They settled that first winter near the farm of R.S. Brown in Fort Calhoun.

In the 1921 History of Western NE & Its People, Vol III, his occupation is listed as fruit grower. He later acquired a number of properties in Washington and Douglas Counties, including a house in Florence at 2854 Potter Street.

He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Florence and served on the vestry board.

It was said of him that he was a man of sterling quality and fine repute, a model husband and father, a worthy and highly respected citizen and neighbor.
