James prepared for College at Oberlin Prep entering as a freshman in 1838. He was a graduate of New York University.

He served as a Captain in the Civil War. He first served in the 90th Regiment, New York Infantry. After the death of his brother, Marsden, he resigned from the 90th Regiment and enlisted in Marsden's Regiment, 131st Regiment, New York Infantry.

He was working as a merchant in New York City when he died from wounds sustained during the Civil War.
