He served as a Corporal in WW I with Company "G," 314th Ammunition Train, 89th Division. (with his future brother-in-law, Lester C. Billings) as Calvary groomsman.

He was stationed in Lorraine, France when his daughter Gwendolyn Lorraine was born. He worked for Cargill Grain in Omaha until his retirement. He also lived for 17 years with Dan and Lorraine Kelly,(daughter and son-in-law) on their Washington County, Nebraska farm.

He was a small man in stature and feisty in demeanor. His favorite song was Red River Valley and his favorite food was fresh garden tomatoes and fried chicken.
