Mary prepared for College at Lake Erie Female Seminary in Painesville, Ohio. Mary attended Vassar College and continued her studies at Oberlin College where she graduated with a degree in literature. While attending Oberlin College, she meet her future husband.

Mary was a school teacher and was a high school principle. After the death of her son, Joseph Raymond Preston, who was killed by the iron-shod hoof of a drunken man's horse, she dedicated her life's work to the Temperance Movement. She worked with her esteemed cousin, Frances Hazelton Ensign Fuller (who headed the national YWCTM). An estimable and highly esteemed lady.
