Evan L. Nelson, 71, a retired Union Pacific Railroad locomotive engineer, died Wednesday evening at St. Anthony Community Hospital of leukemia.
He was born April 13, 1909 at Driggs to David and Daisy Nelson. He attended schools in Marysville and Ashton.
He started to work for the Union Pacific Railroad in 1928 at Ashton as an engine tender and in 1929 was assigned as a fireman on the "North End." Moving to Pocatello in December 1942, he was promoted to engineer, where he had continuous service in freight and passenger assignments. Mr. Nelson retired by May 30, 1974, after 47 years of railroad service. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers GAC and Union Pacific Old Timers Club No. 15.
He married Dorothy H. de Stwolinski August 11, 1934 at Ashton.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Evan D. (De) Nelson, Burley; two daughters, Mrs. Thomas J. (Irene) Blayney, Burley, and Mrs. Stanley D. (Margaret) Cutright, Redding, California; two brothers, Gordon Nelson, Boise, and Grant Nelson, Fort Bragg, N.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Irene Rush, Columbus, Ohio, and Mrs. Venice Hagge, Ogden, Utah; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be noon Saturday at the Henderson Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Tom W. Foster of the United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the family plot in Mountain View Cemetery.
