Hopewell Township's Oldest Resident Succumbs To Illness

Joseph Varner, Hopewell township's oldest resident, died at 11:15 o'clock yesterday morning at his home on Nashport, Rt. 2. He was 96. Mr. Varner had been in failing health for some time and had been seriously ill since Thanksgiving.

A retired farmer, Mr. Varner was born Oct. 8, 1856 on the same farm where he died. He was the son of George and Mary Jane Burrier Varner, early Muskingum county residents.

He was a member of the Mt. Olive EUB church near Gratiot.

Surviving are two sons, Harley E. of 532 Grandview avenue and George E. Varner of Nashport Rt. 1; one daughter, Mrs. Eva B. Cody of Nashport Rt. 1; one brother, J. Homer Varner of near Frazeysburg; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

His wife, the former Dorothy Jane Claypool, died Nov. 11, 1930. One son, three sisters and two brothers also preceded him in death.

The body was removed to the Baughman funeral home in Frazeysburg and will be returned to the family home at 1 o'clock this afternoon.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Beulah church with Rev. Glenn Biddle and Elder James Bibler officiating. Burial will be in the Beulah cemetery.
