Mrs. Martha Burton Cooley, 75 wife of Isaac M. Cooley of 2454 Monroe, died Saturday in a local hospital at four-thirty p.m. following a short illness.
Mrs. Cooley, prominent L.D.S. church worker, was born Oct. 11, 1872, in Ogden, a daughter of William W. and Rachel Fielding Burton. She attended the Ogden City schools and was graduated from Weber academy and later from the University of Utah with honors in 1897. Then she taught school at the old Central school in Ogden and the present Madison school.
On Sept. 12, 1900, she was married to Mr. Cooley in the Salt Lake L.D.S. temple.
Mrs. Cooley was a Sunday school teacher for many years, state president of the Y.W.M.I.A., member of the stake Relief society and counselor to President Almira C. Rich of Mount Ogden stake Relief society. One of her poems, "The Pioneers," has been adopted by the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers as the official theme. She was a charter member of the Acacia club of Ogden for which she also wrote a theme song.
She is survived by her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Fred (Kathryn) Duker of Hawaii; two grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Rachel Ballentyne, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Sarah Foulger, Ogden; C. F. Burton, Auburn, Wyo., and Robert I. Burton, Salt Lake City.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the mortuary at 533 Twenty-sixth
