Clarence was born on a farm near Minier, Illinois in 1898, then in 1901 his family moved to one northwest of Shipshewana, Indiana. In 1902 they moved to another farm near the Forks Church, also in Lagrange County, where Clarence learned English at a one room school, since his family spoke a Pennsylvania Dutch dialect at home. Then in 1911, his family moved to a farm where the Little Elkhart River crosses CR-18 just west of the county line in Middlebury Township, Elkhart County, Indiana and he went to the one room Forest Grove grade school. Then he graduated from Middlebury High School in 1916 and attended one semester at Goshen College, which qualified him to teach school in Illinois or Iowa. When he refused to teach in Illinois, his Dad refused to send any more children to college. Clarence was called "Doc", since he drove his horse and buggy so fast, like a doctor in a hurry to see a patient. In 1922 he married Audra Conrad, who bore Kathryn, Evelyn and Loleta, before she died in 1927 of heart problems. In 1932 he married Ruth Kaufman, who bore Philip, Ernest and Gretchen. They then moved to a farm on State Road 49 south of Valparaiso, Indiana in Morgan Township, Porter County in 1937. Clarence worked at the Malden Co-op Elevator from 1941 until 1962 when Dr. Lewis' widow willed this farm to him. He then died on Wednesday, November 11, 1970 of a heart attack and was buried in Valparaiso's Graceland Cemetery.
