John Joseph Stinson was a son of Daniel Green Stinson and Esther Gaston. He was named for his maternal great and grand fathers.

While attending the College of Georgia, also known at the time as Franklin College, Joseph died on 13 October 1854 in Athens, Clarke Co., Georgia, at age 21 years, 10 months and 10 days.

John Joseph Stinson was laid to rest in the churchyard cemetery where his forefathers and parents were lifelong members.
