Melissa Lucinda Stinson, a daughter of Daniel Greene Stinson and the former Miss Esther Gaston, was born May 24th 1822 in the bounds of Richburg near Cedar Shoals, the old Gaston Family homestead in Chester County, South Carolina. Melissa's great-grandfather, Justice John Gaston and his family were well-known patriots during the American Revolution.

In 1843, Melissa married Rev. John Laughlin McDonald, a widower with a young daughter. Rev. McDonald was minister of Union A.R.P. at Richburg. He would later serve Tirzah and Neeley's Creek A.R.P. churchs; ending his career at New Hope A.R.P. in Douglass.

Melissa and Rev. McDonald were blessed with the following known children:
