Bertha Charlotte Suppe Matthes was born in a room built within a barn in New Frankfort, Saline Co., Missouri, on July 25, 1867. Her parents were Friederick Karl and Johanna Dorothea (Froliche) Suppe. She married Fred Richard Matthes on June 20, 1889, in New Frankfort, Saline Co., Missouri. Bertha and Fred had nine children: Frank Edward, Leonard Arnold, Clara Frances, Emma Lorina, Arthur Raymond, Emery Edwin, Edna Leta, Homer Clarence, and Howard Otis. They moved to Texas about 1903, and lived in Wharton Co., Jackson Co., and Matagorda Co. After her husband's death in 1933, she continued to live in her home in Ganado, Jackson Co., Texas. About 1938, she moved to Blessing, Matagorda Co., Texas, to live with her son, Frank, and his children. In 1940, she bought a home in Bay City, Matagorda Co., Texas, and lived alone. She died May 18, 1950, at Matagorda General Hospital, Bay City, Matagorda Co., Texas, and was buried in the Palacios Cemetery, Palacios, Matagorda Co., Texas.
