Notes for MARY LUELLA BRIIX:

Mary Luella Briix, daughter of George and Victoria Briix, was born in Hope, Kansas on March 4, 1906. The family moved to the homestead of George's parents, north of Delavan and here is where Luella grew up. She attended District# 60 country grade school where she graduated from the eighth grade. Luella and her twin sister then attended Dague Business University at Wichita, Kansas.

Luella married Reuben Clifford Ek at her parents' farm home on March 10, 1926. Their first home was just NE of the Marion Hill Lutheran Church or NW of Dwight, Kansas. They moved in 1928 to a farm home, just west of her parents' home or NW of Delavan. Their son Donald Eugene was born there on February 26, 1929. In March of 1931 they moved to a farm NW of White City, Kansas. It was here that Doris Elaine and Betty Louise were born, Doris in April of 1931 and Betty in October of 1932. In those days it seemed that every few years people moved, for many reasons. These years were hard for both land owners and for those who rented. The next move for the family was in about March of 1933, to a farm SW of Skiddy, Kansas. This place was called the Hanson place and it was in the fall of 1934 that Don started school at District #72, a little country school just up over the hill from their home. In about 1936 they moved to what was called the Swenson place North of White City, Kansas or East of Skiddy. Doris started school in 1937 just down the hill from the home to the country school called Stone Chapel. Betty started school here also in 1938. Maxine Luella was born in April of 1940 and after Maxine was born Luella made frequent trips to Kansas City University Hospital where she was given radiation for a tumor. The family lived on the Swenson place until March of 1943, when they moved to the Goss place North of Dwight, Kansas. Donald was an eighth grader, Doris a fifth grader and Betty a fourth grader at Quaker country grade school.

Reuben and Luella in March of 1945 made their last move - they bought a farm, one mile north and two miles west of Dwight. They purchased the farm from Ernest and Alta Price. This was a big undertaking for the family, but with hard work and a dairy herd, they made it work. Reuben died in June of 1954 and Luella and Maxine remained on the farm for two years - still dairying and with help remained there until 1956, when Luella was hired as the first school lunchroom cook at Dwight. She and Maxine moved from the farm into town where Maxine attended high school as a junior. Luella remained the head cook of the lunchroom for 18 years when she retired. She suffered a heart attack in the spring of 1969, but by September was able to return to her duties as cook in the lunchroom.

Following a brief illness Luella departed this life at the Morris County Hospital in Council Grove, Kansas on July 7, 1980, at the age of 74 years, four months and three days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Reuben, and one grandson, Rodney Keith Morgan in 1974.

In 1950 she became a member of the Marion Hill Lutheran Church, where she remained a faithful member of the congregation until her death. She also belonged to the Home and Garden Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Harmony Club, and was an active member of the Senior Citizens of Dwight. Her survivors include one son, Donald Ek and wife Elaine; three daughters: Doris and husband Keith Morgan, Betty and husband Kenneth Morgan and Maxine and husband Bill Pickett; a twin sister, Louise Zscheile; a brother, Robert Briix; ten grandchildren; and two great-grand-children. Her death was caused by a heart attack.

Luella was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother, and a friend to all who knew her. Peace be to her memory.

One of the saddest accidents that has ever happened occurred at the home of George Briix north of town. While the parents were outside the house their little twin girls about 18 months old managed to get to the incubator which their mother had carefully penned away, removed the lamp and upset the oil on the floor around them. When their parents came in the smoke was so dense that they were at first unable to see the children. Both babies are so badly burned that if they live, which is very doubtful, will be scarred and perhaps crippled for life. Dr. McCullough has worked faithfully for their relief and the little sufferers and all are hoping for the best results. The parents and little ones have the sympathy of all.
