Retired New Holstein Civic Leader Summoned
NEW HOLSTEIN—(Special)—George L. Leverenz, 83, a retired businessman and civic leader, died late Saturday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Carrol G. Rock, Route 2, Plymouth.

A native and life-long resident of the community, Mr. Leverenz served as an official during three stages of New Holstein's growth—as town clerk, village president and mayor. His death followed a protracted illness. He had been visiting at the farm home of his daughter, Mrs. Rock, three and a half miles west of Greenbush, for the past six weeks.

A son of Joachim and Minnie Leverenz, pioneer Calumet County residents, he was born July 11, 1868, at New Holstein. He attended school in the town of Charlestown and Oshkosh State Teachers College.

In his 20's, Mr. Leverenz was a rural school teacher. Prior to entering the merchandising field he taught school at Black Creek Falls in Marathon County, Little Kohler in Ozaukee County, and in Calumet County for five years. In 1899, in partnership with the late Robert Schilling, he organized the Leverenz-Schilling Hardware Co., selling out his interest to his partner's brother, Edwin, in 1909. He then became associated with the Schmidt Pea Harvesting Co. as secretary. After World War I he purchased a dairy farm on the west outskirts of New Holstein. He was engaged in farming until 1934. Mr. Leverenz operated a gas and oil wholesale-retail business here from 1934 until 1947. Since that time he had lived in retirement at his home, 1820 Wisconsin Ave., New Holstein.

Active in civic affairs for more than 35 years, Mr. Leverenz served as town clerk before New Holstein was incorporated as a village. In 1912 he was elected village president, and in 1930 was elected mayor of the city. He served as village postmaster from 1923-28, as a member of the school board for 23 years, and as a member of the Calumet County Board of Supervisors for 10 years, from 1935 until he resigned in 1945. Mr. Leverenz was a charter member of the Maennerchor, organized in 1888, the Modern Woodmen of America, the New Holstein Volunteer Fire Department, and was a director of the People's State Bank for years. He also was affiliated with the Calumet Club.

His marriage to Eliese Timm was performed Oct 24, 1894, at New Holstein. She preceded him in death.

Survivors are one son; H. Timm Leverenz, New Holstein; two daughters. Mrs. Rock and Mrs. Lloyd Hartig, Greenbush; six grandchildren; a brother, William of Waldo, and two sisters, Mrs. Gus Weber and Miss Lizzie Leverenz, New Holstein.

Funeral services will be held at Erbe Hoffman Funeral Home, New Holstein, with Victor D Vriessen, a Million House seminarian serving Bethel Methodist Church, Meggers, officiating. Burial will be in New Holstein City Cemetery.
