Services will be held at Baca's Funeral Chapel in Deming, NM, at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, 2008. Concluding services and internment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.
Lawrence was born December 5, 1918 in Wise County, TX. He was the seventh child of Thomas Irving and Janetta Rebecca Phillips Hays.
Lawrence was a veteran of the Second World War serving honorably as part of the D-Day Invasion at Normandy. He was later wounded in France and was awarded the Purple Heart.
Following the war, Lawrence graduated from Abilene Christian College with a BA Degree and began a career in education as an elementary school teacher in Deming in 1949. He then earned his MA degree at Western New Mexico University and moved into school administration. It was during this time that he married Frankie Gerean Cook on June 10, 1958. Lawrence served as the principal of Bell Elementary School in Deming from 1958 until his retirement in 1983.
He is survived by his two sons, Lawrence Wilson Hays, Jr. of Albuquerque, Michael Brent Hays and his wife Kathy of Pueblo, CO; one daughter, Ginna Gerean Hays-Cumley and her husband David of Firestone, CO; his two sisters, Lillie Bell "Tillie" Hays and Pernedia Frances "Nita" Ruebush, of Deming, NM, five grandchildren, Diana, Ethan, and Seth Cumley, and Caitlin and James Hays and one great grandchild, Degan Moore.
He was preceeded in death by his parents Thomas and Janetta Hays, his wife, Frankie Hays, and family members Buelah May Waldrop, Samuel Lee Hays, Thomas Oliver Hays, Addie Ruth Nelson, Clarence Edward Hays, and Jewell Dean McConathy.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to local Hospice Organizations or to local literacy programs.
